Originally this small town was a swamp, which was reclaimed in the late 19th century.

It is situated between Rethymnon and Chania, at the border of a very long sandy beach. Nowadays it is difficult to realize that this area used to be a swamp, except for the many Eucalyptus trees that were planted in order to dewater the soil. Also the river Almiros is one of the last swamp remembrances. The river is situated west of the village, next to the last tavern. You will be surprised by the big quantities of fish living in these waters.

The Georgioupolis of today is a busy tourist village with a variety of accommodations, shops and taverns.

“It is, however, a good base if you want to discover the western part of Crete.”

A daytrip to the nearby lake of Kournas can be recommended. From Georgioupolis an adorable tourist train departs several times a day, to show you the lake and its beautiful surroundings.
After a breathtaking trip along the road from Vryses at the North coast to the South, between 2 tops of the Lefka Ori (the White Mountains), you will arrive in Chora Sfakion at the South coast.
